When I first saw that MTV was doing a list of the hottest MCs, again, I laughed for about 5 minutes. I sat there and said to myself, "what the fuck does MTV really know about hip-hop?" Well the answer to this point is, nothing. Now, when I say that they don't know anything about hip-hop doesn't mean that this list to this point isn't correct. It is. The ranks may not be what I, or others, may agree with. But, baring any outlandish names mentioned in the top 4, this is list has included about the same I would include, well, when looking at it the same way MTV looks at it.
I think the top 4 will be comprised of some combination of Jay-Z, Kanye, Eminem and Soulja Boy. Possibly could throw in there Drake in place of Soulja Boy, but knowing MTV that wont happen. I still am holding down my prediction that Hova will be number 1, and I totally agree with that, 100%.
Now, going back to what I said about MTV not knowing anything about rap. There are so many names that should be on this list who are WAY better MCs than Gucci Mane, Jeezy, Rick Ross and even 50 most of the time. For instance J. Cole, all the members of Slaughterhouse (Budden, Royce, Ortiz, Crooked), Jay Rock, Blu, Wale, Chamillionaire, Method Man, Red Man, Ya Boy, Young Chris, and lets not forget about ALL of the albums that still have yet to be released in '09. Wale, Rakim, Joe Budden, Royce da 5'9"(who I think will have the AOTY), Stat Quo, Too Short, Snoop, Saigon. But really, its whatever, MTV is more focused on tabloids, who has the most album sales and exposed enough. Which is fine, that is what MTV has become.
If I was forced to make a quick, shitty, not well thought out list....this would be it:
10. Kid Cudi (Despite my hate of his album, it was still good, Good Mixtapes)
9. 50 Cent (2 good Mixtapes and an Album still coming)
8. Wale (Great Mixtape and an Album still coming)
7. J. Cole (Classic Mixtape)
6. Joell Ortiz (Good Mixtape, Slaughterhouse, upcoming album)
5. Joe Budden(Slaughterhouse, Padded Room, Escape Route and Great Escape still to come.)
4. Loso (Features, Loso's Way)
3. Royce da 5'9 (Slaughterhouse, Street Hop)
2. Eminem (Album)
1. Jay-z (Album, plus, he's fucking Hova lol)
